Articular Cartilage Damage

April 12, 2023

Articular Cartilage is the layer of smooth connective tissue that covers the ends of bones at every joint. This tissue is maintained and repaired on a continuous basis. It is one of the most lubricated materials on earth and has the lowest coefficient of friction, but this tissue can also be damaged.

Cartilage can be damaged due to injuries, malalignment of bones and certain degenerative conditions all of which can be magnified by wear and tear. When the damage of cartilage is greater than the repair, over time cartilage can thin out.

Knee pain, stiffness, loss of range of motion and swelling are the most common symptoms. If you have any of these symptoms you should consult a doctor.

Cartilage damage can be repaired, but it is easier and offers better results when done early.
